Frantic Assembly started as Frantic Theatre Company in 1991 in order to take a performance of Christopher Hampton’s ‘Savages’ to Edinburgh Festival. Swansea University Drama Society Players didn’t quite match the ambition of the piece so the name Frantic was chosen, in honour of the general working practice employed at that time.
Directed by Swansea-based physical theatre supremo’s Volcano Theatre, the company’s debut was a sell-out success, repeated the following year with a version of William M. Hoffman’s ‘As Is’, directed by Scott and Steven.
Conversations during this period gave rise to the formation of the Frantic Theatre Company in 1994 by Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett as Artistic Directors and Vicki Middleton as Company Administrator.
