How do you write your shows?
We make quite a range of performances. In addition to our full-scale public productions, we also make many what we call residency shows. These are devised from a theme, and the creative team take responsibility for the text within the show.
The relationship with the writer of a project is dependent upon that project. I think it is important to state that devising is not creating without a writer. Some of the most exciting moments are devising with the writer. The clarity we need is around the meaning of ‘writing.’ If you mean the creation of the words then the playwright will certainly provide that and, depending on their process, this might or might not include contributions and improvisations from the cast and creatives.
If you are referring to the shape and overall structure of the show, then it is a more complex matter and depends on the production. You could say physical scenes are written as they contain vital emotional beats of the show. The writer does not always lead this as a physical scene might be a suggestion of what is missing from the text or what does not need to be said through text. I might take more of a role in shaping the production and how text is used and what text is needed but it really does depend upon the process of writer.
